Board and Fellowship Certifications are additional designations that physicians can receive after attaining their M.D. degrees. After graduation from medical school, physicians go on to residency programs for additional, more specialized training (Internal Medicine, Urology, Radiology, etc.). After completion of the residency they can go into practice in their respective specialties.
A majority of physicians go on and take special exams to become board-certified (like a lawyer passing the bar) in their chosen specialties. Fellowship training, which follows board certification, is highly competitive (not all will attain a fellowship certification) and involves highly-specific training and certification standards. Fellowships are available in all specialty areas.
